Prescriptions from a hospital or clinic

If a hospital specialist has recommended a new medicine for you, they will usually send the request directly to our practice.

A GP must review this request before we can issue the prescription to your pharmacy. This process is different from ordering a repeat prescription and takes longer.

The process and what you need to do

1. The hospital sends the request

The hospital or clinic will send a letter to the practice with the details of your new medicine.

2. Check we have received it

A few days after your hospital appointment, please contact us to check that we have received the letter. You can do this using our online admin form or by calling reception.

3. Your GP reviews the request

Once we have the letter, a GP will carefully review the hospital's recommendation. This is an important safety check to make sure the new medicine is right for you and works safely with your other medications.

4. The prescription is issued

Please allow up to 7 working days for this process from the day we receive the letter. We will then send the prescription to your nominated pharmacy.

If you need the medicine urgently

If the hospital team has told you that you need to start a medicine urgently (in less than 7 days), you must ask them for a prescription.

The hospital is responsible for giving you any medicine you need to start immediately. They can also supply the first few days of your medication from the hospital pharmacy.
